Shoultz Murder Trial
Continued
The trial
of a Crothersville man accused of killing his father in 2009 has
been continued. John Shoultz III is accused of the fatal
shooting of his father during a family fight over a dog where
Shoultz allegedly taped together the legs of
the pet.
Police say Shoultz told them he fired one shot in the ceiling
before firing three shots at his father in self-defense because
he believed his father was going to cut him or his girlfriend
with a straight razor his father was holding. Shoultz’s
attorneys requested the continuation because of a death in their
family. The trial was set for June 4.
Mayes Requests
Bond Hearing
An accused
murderer in Jeffersonville is seeking to have a bond set. Joe
Mayes, 47 is being held without bond for allegedly killing
Anthony Redd in October during a robbery. A probable cause
affidavit states Katrina Baker met Redd for a drug transaction
when she began to perform oral sex as they were parked behind a
building. Mayes allegedly walked up to the vehicle and demanded
pills from Redd and then allegedly shot Redd multiple times in
the head, when he said he didn’t have any. Baker was charged
with robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery and is still in
jail, while her boyfriend James Lawson was released on a $50,000
bond. He was charged with two counts of assisting a criminal
because he allegedly washed the clothes of Mayes and Baker to
remove blood. Both Baker and Lawson have trial dates set for
March. Mayes’ attorneys
argue that although Indiana law prohibits a person charged with
murder to be able to post bail, the person is entitled if the
state’s evidence against them is not strong. A hearing was set
for February 13 for evidence to be shown that the state does not
have enough proof that Mayes committed murder.
